Multi Cultural Moka Pot

A Celebration of Coffee Cultures

The Multi Cultural Moka Pot, designed by Amit Naor, combines the traditions of Turkish Ibrik and Italian MokaPot to create a unique coffee maker that celebrates the diversity of coffee cultures.

As a coffee addict, Amit Naor delved into the history, traditions, and tastes of coffee. He realized that each culture has its own unique way of making coffee, steeped in years of tradition and ritualism. Inspired by the melting pot of cultures in his home country of Israel, Naor set out to create a coffee maker that would pay homage to each culture and bring people together.

The Multi Cultural Moka Pot aims to bridge the gaps between different cultures by focusing on what they have in common. Naor took the iconic Turkish Ibrik and the Italian MokaPot and combined their strengths and unique features. The result is a coffee maker that not only brews a perfect cup of coffee but also symbolizes the power of connection.

The design of the Multi Cultural Moka Pot required careful consideration of both technology and materials. The main parts were hand-made using metal spinning and silver soldering, taking inspiration from the Ibrik. Other components, such as the handle, were laser-cut and 3D printed. The materials used include copper, brass, and nylon 6:6, combining durability and aesthetics.

With dimensions of 150mm width, 100mm depth, and 200mm height, the Multi Cultural Moka Pot can brew up to 4 cups of coffee at a time. Its user-friendly operation involves filling the base with water, inserting the funnel, and loosely filling it with medium ground coffee. The top section is then clicked onto the base using the handle, and the coffeemaker is placed on low to medium heat. Within 4-6 minutes, the coffee is ready to be served, bringing people together to enjoy a moment of connection and appreciation.

The Multi Cultural Moka Pot project began in July 2017 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and was completed in February 2018 in Tel Aviv. It was exhibited in the "Baemtsa" group Exhibition in March 2018, further showcasing its innovative design and cultural significance.

The design process for the Multi Cultural Moka Pot presented several challenges. Combining the Ibrik and MokaPot mechanisms required finding a balance between the two and ensuring a seamless user experience. The solution was to use the MokaPot's locking handle mechanism, simplifying the brewing process and enhancing usability.

The Multi Cultural Moka Pot has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The Multi Cultural Moka Pot is not just a coffee maker; it is a symbol of unity and connection. By combining the traditions of different cultures, Amit Naor has created a design that celebrates diversity and brings people together over a shared love for coffee.
